Venus’ Dream Vision - Venus in Cancer Oil
At dawn, Venus Day, during Venus Hour, at 6:03am, July 5, 2024 in Washington, D.C. Venus’ Dream Vision was created. What began as an experimental New Moon astral magic creation, rapidly developed as a fated co-creation with threads of fate at every turn months prior its inception. I give this art the name Venus’ Dream Vision, as it became evident during my personal divination that this is not an exclusively “Venus” talismanic work, rather, this is a Venus greatly devoted to the dispositorship of the simultaneously perfecting Cancer New Moon. As the dark moon wanes, Venus Hesperos presents as an intentional, patient, introspective, goddess dwelling in the summer gardens of night blooms. Her garden is that of reminiscence, fountains of pining-memory becomes her desire, her luxury, her conviction. Evening Venus, in the third decan of Cancer, governing the 11th and 4th house, acting as first triplicity lord of the 11th, is the essence of what dreams may come. She is simultaneously all things which have the capacity to materialize, as well as all that is aspirational. While in her own sign of triplicity, and decan of Jupiter, she is assisted by the alliances, affirmations, and allegiance of benefactors and friendships.
Her exaltation lord, Jupiter, rejoicing in the 11th place of hopes and dreams, is its own Term and Decan, and rules over the Lot of Dreams at 7°42’ Sagittarius. For context and understanding of the Lot of Dreams, I defer to A.S. Katoch whose research highlights the connections of the this lot, known as klēros oneirōn, with the multifacetedness of dreams over one’s lifetime - perhaps the vastness of a soul’s understanding of time, rather than our human perception - the stories and dramas of desires and wishes and prophecy they foretell, perchance we dream. The lot has connotations of wish fulfillment, as much as they are initiatory, working, participatory.
The New Moon forming at 13’ Cancer falls upon the asteroid Klotho. The youngest goddess of the Three Fates, the Moirai - one who spins the threads of fate of lifetimes. Cancer, Decan 2, associated with the 3 of Cups in tarot - three women, cloistered, rejoicing, celebratory, fecund with their shared intimate dance and overflowing, intermingling, cups of laughter and safekept wisdom. It is also worth noting that this New Moon happens near the fixed star Sirius, of which Alice Sparklykat has written a wonderful summary of its connection to memory online (https://www.alicesparklykat.com/articles/106/The_Fixed_Star_Sirius/). After my last working for Capricorn Decan 3-Sun, I still have in my possession, an antique spinning wheel. A colleague brought to my attention that spinning wheels have ties to divinatory practices and ecstatic states. Traditions of spinning and prayer exist across many traditions; notably, I also think of the story of Erinna, Sappho’s favorite student, whose mother chained her to a spinning wheel in order to make her spin rather than sing, or to sing only when she was spinning, but she became incredibly successful and her poems were known and admired, specifically her poetry of lament (Music and Women: The Story of Women in Their Relation to Music by Sophie Drinker & Ruth A. Solie).
“I need my memories. They are my documents. I keep watch over them… You have to differentiate between memories. Are you going to them or are they coming to you. If you are going to them, you are wasting time. Nostalgia is not productive. If they come to you, they are the seeds for sculpture." - Louise Bourgeois cited in: Exh. Cat., Brooklyn, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Louise Bourgeois: The Locus of Memory: Works 1982-1993, Part 3, 1994, p. 23.
There is wisdom of the Venus in this working, one who knows what she desires, knows no boundary between love and anticipatory grief, but insofar as her need for intimacy jointly serves what was otherwise fated all along. She holds that conviction and honor for the fickleness of fate and fortune because she waits for others to arrive there with her, in the night as they sleep. Much of this working was encouraged by my recent practice with Mnemosyne, whose river one could drink from to preserve the memory of their prior lifetimes. Mnemosyne (who is conjoined my Lot of Dreams in Virgo natally), returns to that exact degree she resided at my birth just 9 days after this working, as she sits on my Lot of Union exactly in the chart of the election.
Not only does this working ideally provide love premonitions aided by dreaming, but specifically this working should provide specific insight into the Mars Retrograde cycle of 2024. In the chart, Mercury sits close to the exact degree Mars will station in Leo in December 2024, before retracing his steps back in Cancer, ultimately stationing in Cancer and, just as he does - begins to form antiscian to Jupiter in Gemini, just as Venus does in this election. The direct connection between this New Moon in Cancer and the Full Moon in Cancer at the very moment Mars is visually the brightest, largest, and closest to the Earth, is distilled directly into this election in order for one’s own intuition to give discernment, prophecy, and love-courage during those long 80 days of Mars’ retrograde.
Lastly, this Venus’ Dream Vision is an homage to Chaucer’s Book of the Duchess. Of which, I read aloud immediately following the procedure. Book of the Duchess, written by Chaucer in 1370 for John of Gaunt to commemorate his deceased wife, Blanche, who likely passed from the plague at the age of 26, tells of the story of a narrator who cannot sleep, so he reads the story of Alcyone and Ceyx from Ovid’s Metamorphosis, (an adaptation of which I saw recently the day of viewing two double rainbows on a Cancer Moon), and falls into a sleep through which he encounters a vision. In the vision, he awakes on a May morning and goes to join a hunt but finds himself alone when he discovers a knight dressed in black who is writing a poem. He and the Knight have an exchange, the Knight inconsolable from the loss of a love, and the narrator attempting to reassure him at every turn that there are more opportunities, essentially, when it becomes clear that this Knight isn’t suffering from unrequited love, but the loss of his wife:
“'Sir,' quod I, 'where is she now?'
'Now!' quod he, and stinte anoon.
Therwith he wex as deed as stoon,
And seyde, 'Allas! that I was bore,
That was the los, that here before
I tolde thee, that I had lorn.
Bethenk how I seyde here beforn,
"Thou wost ful litel what thou menest;
I have lost more than thou wenest" —
God woot, allas! Right that was she!'
'Allas! sir, how? What may that be?'
'She is deed!' 'Nay!' 'Yis, by my trouthe!'
'Is that your los? By god, hit is routhe!'
As part of the cycle of this Venus-then later-Mars traversing through Cancer, much of the knowledge gained will also be how to create intimate spaces, including spaces of care-witnessing. What begins as hunt, ends as comfort; What begins as restlessness, ends as premonition of wish fulfillments; What begins as burdens and violence from mothers; ends as celebration of ecstatic poetics. These are all spindle stories, wheel stories, seemingly reversals, but perhaps not, if desires are only ever memories still living in other lives, other worlds, we have yet to love, or create homes in.
